Nvidia to Expand Co-Packaged Optics Capacity 15-Fold

Nvidia and packaging partner Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) plan to increase co-packaged optics capacity 15-fold by mid-2027, then to 30 times its current level by the end of 2028. CEO Jensen Huang announced the roadmap at GTC Berlin, citing surging AI data-centre demand and the limits of copper interconnects. Co-packaged optics (CPO) places optical engines alongside switch silicon to improve bandwidth density and power efficiency. Nvidia’s Spectrum-6 CPO switches are intended for its next-generation Vera Rubin AI infrastructure. The company is also investing $1.1 billion with KYEC to expand US semiconductor testing, while Amkor plans to boost interposer wafer capacity by more than 300% by the end of 2028. The expansion signals Nvidia’s expectations for continued growth in AI infrastructure demand.
Neutral
The announcement is mainly about Nvidia’s AI data-centre supply chain and optical networking, not cryptocurrency adoption, regulation or token economics. It therefore has no clear direct catalyst for major crypto assets, making a neutral market view appropriate. In the short term, the expansion plan could reinforce positive sentiment around AI infrastructure. That may benefit AI-themed crypto tokens or related equities if traders treat Nvidia’s capacity targets as evidence of sustained technology investment. However, such moves would likely reflect broader risk appetite and sector narratives rather than a direct change in crypto fundamentals. Traders should also distinguish announced capacity plans from realised production and revenue. Over the longer term, more efficient data-centre networking could support continued growth in AI computing. Past AI-related announcements have sometimes prompted short-lived rallies in AI-linked tokens, but those assets can be volatile and their prices do not necessarily track semiconductor demand. Bitcoin and the wider crypto market are generally more sensitive to liquidity, interest-rate expectations, regulation and overall risk sentiment. The scale of AI infrastructure spending and its financing needs may also raise concerns about debt or energy constraints, potentially weighing on risk assets if those pressures intensify. Overall, the news is relevant as a technology-sector signal, but it does not by itself establish a bullish or bearish crypto-market trend.
