Nvidia Approves Record $150B Share Buyback
Nvidia has approved a record $150 billion increase to its share buyback programme, lifting its remaining repurchase capacity to $235 billion through fiscal 2028. The Nvidia buyback is the largest authorisation of its kind by a public company and signals management confidence in sustained AI and accelerated-computing demand.
Nvidia spent $39.8 billion repurchasing shares and paid $6.3 billion in dividends during the first half of fiscal 2027. Second-quarter revenue rose 106% year on year to $96.2 billion, while Data Centre revenue increased 117% to $89 billion. Its shares initially gained more than 2%, although broader market pressure later reduced the advance.
The company is also working with financial institutions to mobilise more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure projects. However, lenders remain cautious about accepting GPUs as long-term collateral. Competition from AMD, Intel and custom chips developed by major cloud providers could still pressure Nvidia’s margins and pricing power.
For traders, the Nvidia buyback may support NVDA through a lower share count and reflects strong free cash flow. Its impact on cryptocurrency prices is indirect. Crypto markets are more likely to respond through AI-sector sentiment, technology valuations, interest rates and overall risk appetite.
Neutral
The announcement is positive for Nvidia and semiconductor stocks, but it does not directly alter cryptocurrency supply, demand or network fundamentals. In the short term, the record buyback could improve broader technology-sector sentiment and support risk appetite, which may offer limited indirect help to crypto-linked assets. However, any impact is likely to be outweighed by interest rates, liquidity, Bitcoin flows and overall market positioning.
Over the longer term, continued AI infrastructure spending could reinforce investment in high-growth technology and maintain a supportive risk-on narrative. At the same time, competition, GPU pricing pressure and cautious lending conditions could increase volatility in technology valuations. Because no cryptocurrency or blockchain project is directly affected, the expected price impact on cryptocurrencies remains neutral.
