Papertrade’s $42.24M Revenue Raises PAPER Sustainability Concerns
Papertrade reported $42.24 million in seven-day protocol revenue, but the figure has raised questions about how sustainable its trading and reward model is. Much of the reported income is linked to trader losses and pool surpluses, rather than conventional trading fees. Papertrade references Hyperliquid’s best bid and ask midpoint instead of matching equivalent perpetual trades. Its asymmetric profit-and-loss rules can deduct part of winners’ profits without reducing losses on equivalent terms. The platform launched without external liquidity providers, so profitable traders may face delayed payouts if pool funds are insufficient.
Papertrade issues PAPER to users who incur eligible losses, with higher issuance rates for early participants. PAPER holders can stake the token for USDC rewards. Lookonchain reported that one trader generated $2.84 billion in volume, lost about $1.71 million, and received 136 million PAPER plus roughly $1.07 million in USDC staking rewards. After claimed and pending rewards, the trader’s cash loss was about $637,000, excluding PAPER’s uncertain market value. Another early account reportedly received about $997,000 in USDC rewards against $979,000 in trading losses while retaining 252 million PAPER.
The model carries significant trading risks: leverage reaches 1,000x, and early data cited in the article showed that 4,395 of 5,836 addresses using that leverage had been liquidated at least once. Reward payouts also fell sharply after launch, while continued PAPER issuance may dilute holders. For traders, headline revenue and incentives do not guarantee lasting returns; sustainability depends on real demand, available pool liquidity and whether revenue can fund rewards without ongoing token incentives.
Bearish
The direct price outlook for PAPER is bearish because the reported revenue and staking rewards are closely tied to trader losses, pool surpluses and token incentives, rather than clearly demonstrated, durable demand for PAPER. Continued issuance may dilute existing holders, while uncertain liquidity and falling reward payouts could weaken buyers’ willingness to hold the token. In the short term, headline revenue and attractive rewards may draw attention and speculative demand, potentially supporting price temporarily. However, traders may also discount the token’s value because reward rates can change and the pool may not always have enough funds to pay profitable users. Over the longer term, PAPER could face selling pressure if incentives decline, issuance continues or actual demand fails to replace rewards as the main source of interest. The 1,000x leverage and liquidation risks also raise the prospect of user losses and reduced platform confidence. These factors do not establish a certain price decline, but they make the risk skew negative for PAPER.
