Papertrade Rule Change Draws ‘Bait and Switch’ Criticism
Delphi Digital markets head Jason Pagoulatos said Papertrade was right to worry that freely transferable PAPER tokens could be targeted by price-manipulation attacks. But he called the project’s decision to rule out transfers after users deposited roughly $140 million “a bad look,” saying it changed the terms after users had committed funds.
Papertrade, a high-leverage trading venue on Hyperliquid’s HyperEVM, launched on Oct. 10. Its initial plan listed token transfers as a later phase, but the team said on Oct. 19 it had no current plans to allow off-contract transfers. Users earn PAPER when they lose money and can stake the token to receive a share of fees.
Pagoulatos said transferable PAPER could make coordinated attacks profitable, and noted that the team had already blocked positions linked to large Hyperliquid orders that moved ether’s price on launch day. He also said limiting leverage or pool size could undermine the platform’s appeal.
Papertrade had distributed about $57 million to PAPER stakers through Oct. 21, according to DefiLlama. Pagoulatos said recent activity appeared more organic, but warned that retaining users who had hoped to farm and sell the token would be difficult.
Bearish
The news is bearish for PAPER holders and sentiment around Papertrade, though its direct effect on the wider crypto market is likely limited. Users deposited about $140 million under expectations that token transfers could arrive later; the team’s reversal leaves them holding a token they cannot transfer. That uncertainty can weaken confidence in PAPER’s liquidity, staking appeal and the project’s credibility, and may encourage users to withdraw activity or avoid similar token incentives.
In the short term, traders may focus on reduced expectations for a liquid PAPER market, changes in staking rewards and platform activity. The reported $57 million in distributions shows substantial past payouts, but rewards alone may not offset concerns about transfer restrictions. The risk of manipulation is also credible: Pagoulatos said large orders moved ether’s price around launch, and a listed PAPER perpetual market was quickly halted and settled. If transferability were introduced without safeguards, leveraged trading could amplify volatility; if it remains restricted, frustration among users may persist.
The broader market impact is likely contained unless the dispute triggers wider withdrawals or renewed scrutiny of DeFi token launches. Similar episodes in crypto, where project teams change token or incentive terms after users commit capital, have often damaged trust and increased selling pressure on related assets. Longer term, Papertrade’s outlook will depend on transparent communication, a credible explanation of the revised terms and evidence of sustainable organic use. Risk controls may protect the venue, but they do not remove the reputational cost of changing expectations after deposits.
