Riot Completes Bitcoin Custody Move to BitGo
Riot Platforms completed its Bitcoin custody transfer from NYDIG Trust Company to BitGo Bank & Trust on October 29, ending an agreement that began in November 2023. The company said it paid no early termination penalty. Under the new terms, BitGo holds Riot’s assets in segregated accounts, and Riot can leave with 14 days’ notice without a fee. Earlier reports linked the custody change to Riot repaying a $200 million Coinbase credit facility and releasing Bitcoin previously pledged as collateral. The transfer amount and Riot’s reasons for changing custodians were not disclosed. Riot sold 20,264 BTC in the first nine months of 2026 for about $1.5 billion and held 2,418 BTC, worth roughly $202 million, at September’s end. Its contracted data center capacity reached 1,151 megawatts as it shifts resources toward expansion. The custody move itself does not signal a change in Bitcoin ownership or an immediate sale, but Riot’s Bitcoin sales and data center strategy remain relevant to traders tracking miner supply and Bitcoin-market exposure.
Neutral
The custody transfer is operational rather than a direct change in Bitcoin ownership, so it does not by itself indicate near-term buying or selling pressure on BTC. The new segregated-account arrangement and 14-day exit option may offer Riot greater custody flexibility, but no transfer amount or immediate market sale was disclosed. In the short term, traders are more likely to focus on Riot’s reported sales of 20,264 BTC during the first nine months of 2026, which represent potential miner supply, while noting that those sales are not evidence of a new sale triggered by the custody move. Over the longer term, Riot’s shift toward data centers could influence its mining exposure and future Bitcoin selling patterns. However, without a change to its stated BTC holdings or a clear new supply event, the custody news alone is unlikely to materially affect Bitcoin’s price or market stability.
