RWA Perpetual Open Interest Nears $20B as Trading Shifts

RWA perpetual open interest has climbed to nearly $20 billion, highlighting a shift in crypto derivatives trading towards tokenized real-world assets. Earlier figures put RWA perpetual open interest at about $9 billion, or 14% of total perpetual open interest, even as aggregate open interest on major platforms fell from $81 billion to around $67 billion. CryptoRank data for October 26, 2026, shows RWA open interest up 192% since June and more than double the $9.3 billion recorded in August. Its share of total perpetual open interest rose from 6% at the start of 2026 to 24% by late September. Centralized exchanges account for 71% of RWA perpetual open interest, while decentralized exchanges hold 29% and lead in equity index derivatives. The growth contrasts with declines in Bitcoin, Ethereum and other token perpetual open interest, suggesting leveraged trading is shifting rather than expanding overall. Open interest tracks outstanding positions, not trading volume or net buying, and does not indicate price direction.
Neutral
The rise in RWA perpetual open interest points to growing trader interest in tokenized equities, commodities and indices, but it does not establish whether traders are net long or net short. The earlier data also showed that RWA growth only partly offset falling open interest in Bitcoin, Ethereum and other tokens as total positions across major platforms contracted. In the short term, the expansion may draw more leveraged activity and liquidity towards RWA contracts, potentially increasing volatility in those markets, but it offers no clear directional signal for crypto prices. Over the longer term, broader access to traditional assets through crypto platforms could diversify derivatives activity and support market development. However, open interest alone cannot confirm new capital inflows or predict price moves, so the direct price impact on cryptocurrencies is neutral.
