Sberbank Wins Russia Crypto Trading Approval

Russia’s central bank has authorized Sberbank, the country’s largest bank, to trade digital currencies, following an earlier approval for crypto custody and record-keeping. Sberbank plans to launch crypto products from 1 December through its online banking and investment services, with Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Tether (USDT) among the expected initial assets, subject to regulatory preparations. It also plans to launch a crypto wallet in December, as the Moscow Exchange is expected to start crypto trading that month. Russia’s digital-currency law took effect on 1 September, creating a framework for crypto exchanges and digital-asset custodians. From 5 October, banks and other organizations could apply for authorization. Retail investors classed as unqualified will be limited to 300,000 roubles a year through one intermediary and must pass a knowledge test; qualified investors can access cryptocurrencies listed on exchange and over-the-counter markets. Crypto payments for goods remain illegal. The new rules and Sberbank’s entry widen regulated access to crypto in Russia, but the reports cite no immediate impact on prices.
Neutral
The approval is a positive development for regulated crypto access in Russia, but the reports provide no evidence of an immediate effect on BTC, ETH or USDT prices. In the short term, the announcement may attract attention and modest buying interest as traders anticipate new bank and exchange services. However, launches are planned for December and remain subject to regulatory preparations, so any price response may be limited or already reflected in expectations. Over the longer term, easier access through a major bank and the Moscow Exchange could broaden participation and support trading liquidity. The annual cap and knowledge test for unqualified investors, restrictions on crypto payments and the absence of reported price effects temper the bullish case. Overall, the news is more significant for Russia’s market infrastructure than for near-term crypto price direction.
