SEC Approves Listing of Volatility Shares’ 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETFs
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has approved a Cboe BZX rule change allowing Volatility Shares to list six triple-leveraged exchange-traded products, including proposed 3x Bitcoin ETF BITH and 3x Ether ETF ETHK. The 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETFs are not trading yet: the SEC must first make their Form S-1 registration statements effective, and no review timeline or launch date has been announced.
The funds would track futures-based benchmarks rather than hold Bitcoin or Ether directly. They aim to deliver three times the benchmark’s daily return, resetting leverage each day. That can amplify short-term gains and losses, while compounding and volatility decay may cause longer-term performance to diverge from three times the underlying asset’s return. The listing approval is a regulatory milestone, but traders should watch for S-1 effectiveness before treating the products as available.
Neutral
The SEC’s approval is a meaningful step towards bringing 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETFs to market, but it does not authorize trading immediately. The funds cannot launch until their S-1 registration statements become effective, and the SEC has given no timetable. As a result, the immediate effect on spot BTC and ETH demand, prices, or market stability is likely limited.
If the products eventually begin trading, they could make leveraged crypto exposure more accessible through standard brokerage accounts and attract short-term trading activity. Similar leveraged products have tended to draw interest from active traders, but their daily reset means they are designed to target one-day returns, not long-term multiples. In volatile or sideways markets, compounding and volatility decay can erode value, while leverage can magnify losses as well as gains.
For now, traders are more likely to treat the decision as a regulatory and product-development signal than as a direct market catalyst. The next key indicator is whether and when the SEC makes the S-1 filings effective. Any later assessment of market impact should also consider trading volumes, fund flows, BTC and ETH volatility, futures-market positioning, and the products’ actual uptake. The approval alone does not establish a sustained bullish or bearish direction.
