South Korea Blocks 27 Unregistered Crypto Platforms
South Korea has blocked or terminated domestic access to 27 websites linked to unregistered overseas crypto platforms, tightening its crypto regulation. The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) said the measures followed reviews on October 6 and 7, and named KuCoin, MEXC, BitMart, BingX, Phemex, XT.com, Bitrue, CoinW and BTCC among the affected platforms. Earlier restrictions had also targeted their apps in Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
Overseas exchanges may need to register with the FIU if they target South Korean customers, including through Korean-language services or won payments. Requirements include Information Security Management System certification; unregistered operators can face up to five years in prison or fines of up to 50 million won. The FIU has referred 44 providers to investigators and warned that recovering funds held on unauthorized platforms may be difficult. It will monitor alternative domains, while DAXA will provide guidance on withdrawals. The crypto regulation measures may disrupt access for South Korean users, but no broader market impact was reported.
Neutral
The restrictions primarily affect access to specific platforms for customers in South Korea; neither summary reports a direct change to the price or fundamentals of a particular cryptocurrency. In the short term, affected users may move funds or trading activity to registered exchanges, and concerns about withdrawal access could cause localized disruption. Such flows could influence liquidity on individual platforms, but there is no evidence here of a broad market reaction. Over the longer term, stricter registration and enforcement may increase compliance costs and reshape local exchange access, while the likely impact on wider crypto prices remains limited. The overall price impact on the cryptocurrencies discussed is therefore neutral.
