Standard Chartered Expands Tokenised Deposits in Hong Kong
Standard Chartered launched tokenised deposits for corporate clients in Hong Kong on 18 December 2025, with Ant International as its first customer. The service supports transfers in HKD, CNH and USD; Singapore’s service supports SGD and USD. Ant uses it for intercompany liquidity transfers through its Whale treasury platform, following a November pilot that included a HK$3.8 million real-money transfer. Tokenised deposits remain bank deposits, but blockchain rails allow eligible clients to move funds around the clock.
The newer development is the expansion of institutional use through the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Ensemble TX platform. Participating banks can transfer tokenised deposits in real time and settle around the clock using tokenised central bank money, including wholesale CBDC. China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade have completed live transactions involving tokenised deposits and settled tokenised money-market funds through the platform. Ensemble TX has grown to 12 participating banks and 20 industry pilot organisations, with Fireblocks and HashKey joining the ecosystem. Standard Chartered also supports 24/7 interbank settlement involving the regulated HKDAP stablecoin and was its first bank distributor.
The launch and subsequent platform activity add institutional payment and treasury use cases for tokenised deposits and strengthen Hong Kong’s digital-asset infrastructure. However, the service is focused on corporate finance rather than trading a widely held cryptocurrency, so any immediate impact on crypto prices is likely to be limited.
Neutral
The announcement does not directly change the supply, demand or use of a major traded cryptocurrency. Tokenised deposits are bank liabilities, and the reported transactions focus on corporate liquidity, payments and tokenised money-market funds. The involvement of banks and financial platforms may support confidence in blockchain-based settlement over the longer term, but that is an indirect infrastructure development rather than a clear near-term catalyst for crypto prices. Traders may monitor future adoption, HKDAP settlement activity and regulatory developments, but the available information points to limited immediate effects on market stability or trading activity in any specific cryptocurrency.
