Standard Chartered Launches Hong Kong Tokenized Deposits
Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) launched a tokenized deposits service on December 18, 2025, with Ant International as its first customer. The blockchain-based service lets corporate clients transfer bank deposit balances 24/7 in Hong Kong dollars (HKD), offshore yuan (CNH) and US dollars (USD). In Singapore, it supports SGD and USD.
Ant International is using the service for intercompany liquidity transfers through its Whale treasury platform. A pilot included a HK$3.8 million real-money transfer in November 2025. Tokenized deposits remain bank deposits, but blockchain rails may help companies move cash outside traditional banking hours.
The service operates under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Project Ensemble. Standard Chartered also supports round-the-clock interbank settlement involving the regulated HKDAP stablecoin and became the first bank to distribute HKDAP. The launch highlights growing institutional use of tokenized money, while its immediate effect is focused on corporate payments and treasury management rather than crypto-market trading.
Neutral
The launch is a positive sign for blockchain adoption by banks, but its direct effect on cryptocurrency prices is likely limited. The service handles commercial bank deposits and corporate treasury transfers; it does not, by itself, create new demand for major crypto assets or change their supply. Standard Chartered’s role in distributing HKDAP and supporting interbank settlement adds to the significance for regulated digital money, but the article provides no figures on transaction volumes or wider market usage.
In the short term, traders may view the announcement as evidence that tokenization is moving into live banking operations. Similar institutional blockchain and tokenization pilots have often attracted attention to the sector without producing a sustained market move, unless accompanied by substantial adoption, investment or regulatory changes. Any reaction is therefore more likely to be sentiment-driven and concentrated in related digital-asset narratives than in broad crypto prices.
Over the longer term, 24/7 tokenized deposits could improve corporate liquidity management and support the development of on-chain settlement. Wider adoption may increase competition and integration between bank deposits and stablecoins, while also strengthening regulated alternatives to crypto-native payment rails. The impact will depend on whether more banks and businesses join, whether transaction volumes grow, and how regulators treat these instruments. For now, the news is structurally relevant but not a clear directional catalyst for the crypto market.
