Standard Chartered Profit Rises 27% on Wealth and Trading

Standard Chartered reported third-quarter pretax profit of $2.25 billion, up 27% year over year and above analysts’ $1.99 billion estimate. Adjusted operating income rose 14% to about $5.8 billion. Wealth Solutions income climbed 26% to a record $1.12 billion for a third consecutive quarter. Affluent clients brought in a record $20 billion in net new money. Global Markets income increased 21%, while credit impairment charges fell to $90 million from $188 million. Unsecured consumer-lending income declined 13% on a constant-currency basis. Standard Chartered raised its full-year operating income growth forecast to above 7%, from 5%–7%, and lifted its return-on-tangible-equity target to above 14%. Its Hong Kong-listed shares rose as much as 8% after the results. The bank also has digital-asset initiatives, including USDC services with Circle, but it did not disclose their contribution to earnings. Standard Chartered’s results were driven mainly by wealth management and trading, not reported crypto revenue.
Neutral
The results are positive for Standard Chartered and its shares, but the direct effect on cryptocurrency markets is limited. Profit growth came from wealth management and conventional financial-market trading. The bank did not report how much its digital-asset services contributed, so the earnings beat does not establish stronger crypto demand or a material change in market liquidity. In the short term, the results may modestly support sentiment toward banks expanding into digital assets. However, traders are more likely to react to crypto-specific catalysts, such as token flows, regulatory developments and broader risk appetite. Similar announcements of institutional crypto services have often generated attention without immediately changing major-asset prices when no meaningful volume or revenue figures are disclosed. Over the longer term, Standard Chartered’s expansion in custody and institutional crypto services could help strengthen traditional financial infrastructure for digital assets. That may support adoption if the services attract clients and generate measurable activity. For now, the bank’s raised forecasts and stronger wealth and trading performance are the main market signals; the report offers no clear directional signal for BTC or the wider crypto market.
