Standard Chartered Adds RLUSD Custody, Plans LMAX Link

Standard Chartered’s Dubai International Financial Centre branch now offers custody of Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin on the XRP Ledger to qualified institutional clients. Separately, Standard Chartered, Ripple and LMAX Group plan to let eligible clients use RLUSD as trading collateral through a collateral-mirroring system: the tokens would remain in bank custody while LMAX credits their value to trading accounts. The proposed LMAX service is not live and still requires documentation, testing and regulatory approvals. RLUSD, launched in December 2024, has a market capitalisation of about $2.45 billion, less than 1% of the roughly $306 billion stablecoin market. The custody launch expands regulated institutional access to RLUSD, while the trading integration’s eventual impact will depend on approval, rollout and adoption.
Neutral
The news is neutral for RLUSD’s price. The live custody service may improve institutional access and confidence, while the planned LMAX collateral link could add utility if it receives approval and attracts users. However, the integration is not yet operational, and the custody launch alone does not establish meaningful demand for RLUSD or change its dollar peg. In the short term, the announcement may prompt attention and modest activity, but RLUSD is designed to remain close to $1, so any price movement is likely to be limited. Longer term, broader institutional use could support liquidity and adoption, but the effect on the token’s market price will depend on actual usage and the stablecoin’s ability to maintain its peg; the announcement does not provide a clear directional price catalyst.
