Standard Chartered Launches UAE Bitcoin and Ether Trading

Standard Chartered has launched Bitcoin and Ethereum trading for eligible professional wealth clients in the UAE, its first crypto trading service for wealth clients globally. Customers can trade through the SC Mobile app using a Standard Chartered USD or AED account, with orders from $50 to $50,000. The service is available around the clock and operates as a closed-loop system: the bank manages custody and settlement, and clients cannot move their crypto to external wallets. The offering is covered by a Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) broker-dealer licence. Standard Chartered says it charges no separate trading or custody fees, but its quoted prices include a spread that can reach 2%. The launch follows the bank’s September introduction of institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in Dubai International Financial Centre. Standard Chartered plans to expand its crypto wealth services to other markets, without specifying a timeline. The UAE’s regulated crypto market is also growing, with Kraken receiving regulatory approval and RAKBANK offering retail crypto services through Bitpanda.
Neutral
The launch is a positive signal for regulated access to Bitcoin and Ethereum, but its direct price impact is likely limited. Eligibility is restricted to professional investors, and the closed-loop structure prevents transfers to external wallets. The $50,000 order cap and spreads of up to 2% may also constrain trading activity. In the short term, the announcement could support sentiment around institutional access without creating substantial new spot-market demand. Over the longer term, expansion to more markets could broaden access and add a modest source of demand, but no expansion schedule has been announced. Similar banking and regulatory announcements can improve confidence, yet their price effects are often muted unless they lead to meaningful inflows or wider customer access. On balance, the effect on BTC and ETH prices is neutral.
