Starknet STRK Holders Vote on Quantum-Safe Layer 1

Starknet has opened a seven-day, non-binding governance vote asking STRK holders whether the Ethereum Layer 2 should research becoming an independent, quantum-resistant Layer 1. Voting runs from Oct. 15 to Oct. 22, 2026. Holders can support further research, oppose it or remain neutral. A “yes” result would not approve a migration. More research, proposals and governance votes would be required, and no transition timeline or final design has been set. StarkWare says an independent Starknet could pursue quantum-resistant security without relying on Ethereum’s upgrade schedule. The network currently depends on Ethereum for data availability and its main bridge, which the proposal identifies as areas of quantum-security concern. STRK would remain the native token under either path, and the bridges would stay open. The vote follows StarkWare’s three-phase quantum-resistance roadmap, announced in June. Ethereum developers formed a dedicated post-quantum team in March and are targeting initial protocol protections by 2029. For traders, the Starknet vote is a governance and long-term technology signal, not an immediate operational or token-supply change.
Neutral
The vote does not authorize a migration, set a timetable or change STRK’s token role or supply. As a result, it has no clear immediate effect on STRK’s fundamentals or network operations, making a sustained short-term price move less likely. Traders may still react to the vote result or headlines, but any volatility would likely reflect sentiment and speculation rather than an implemented protocol change. Over the longer term, research into an independent, quantum-resistant Starknet could be seen as a potential security and autonomy benefit. However, the plan remains exploratory, and the network’s dependence on Ethereum for data availability and its main bridge would require further technical decisions. The market may look for concrete proposals, governance votes and evidence of progress before assigning meaningful value to the possibility. Ethereum’s separate post-quantum work also provides broader context, but neither effort currently signals an immediate change to STRK’s supply or use. Overall, the news is best assessed as neutral for STRK, with potential for sentiment-driven volatility as the discussion develops.
