Stellar Fee-Free Network Posts 7.02M Payments per Second
Stellar says its new fee-free network processed 7.02 million payments per second in an internal benchmark. The test used eight machines operating as a single validator, rather than multiple independent validators, and has not been published for independent review. The Stellar Foundation has not decided how the network will connect to the existing blockchain.
Stellar’s mainnet, by comparison, processed about 14.16 million transactions on October 23, 2026—an average of roughly 164 transactions per second. Its existing fees were around $0.00012 during recent peak usage. The network has also seen quarterly stablecoin transfers reach $25.1 billion, while tokenized real-world assets were valued at a reported $3.4 billion to $4.1 billion.
For XLM traders and Stellar developers, the benchmark signals potential capacity for high-volume payments, but its market significance remains uncertain. Verification across independent validators, a public benchmark and details on how a fee-free system would manage spam and network costs are key outstanding questions. The eventual relationship between the new network and Stellar’s mainnet will determine whether the benefits accrue to the existing ecosystem.
Neutral
The announcement is potentially positive for Stellar’s technology and payment use cases, but it does not yet provide a clear catalyst for XLM. The 7.02 million payments-per-second figure comes from an internal test involving eight machines within a single validator. It is not a measure of throughput across a decentralized network, and external analysts cannot yet verify it. The foundation also has not explained whether the new system will be integrated with the mainnet or operate separately.
In the short term, traders may react to the headline with interest, but the lack of independent validation and implementation details could limit sustained buying or increase volatility if expectations run ahead of evidence. The announcement alone does not establish that XLM demand, network fees or token value will rise. The existing mainnet’s reported activity and stablecoin volume provide useful context, but they do not prove that the new network will add value to XLM.
Longer term, the impact depends on architecture and adoption. If the system is tested across independent validators, proves reliable under real-world conditions and is meaningfully connected to Stellar’s ecosystem, it could strengthen the network’s appeal for high-volume payments and institutional applications. If it remains separate, or if fee-free transactions lack a clear mechanism to deter spam and cover operating costs, benefits to the mainnet and XLM may be limited. As with other blockchain throughput announcements, traders are likely to look for public benchmarks, deployment milestones and actual user activity before treating the headline as a durable market signal. Overall, the opportunity is notable, but uncertainty supports a neutral assessment.
