Strategy Pauses Bitcoin Buys, Repurchases $205M in STRC
Strategy made no Bitcoin purchases or sales from October 19 to 25, according to an October 26 SEC filing. Its holdings remained at 848,517 BTC, bought for about $64.02 billion at an average price of $75,446 per coin. Instead, Strategy used $204.9 million to repurchase about 2.07 million shares of its floating-rate STRC preferred stock—not MSTR common shares.
The pause follows several weeks of smaller Bitcoin purchases, but does not alone signal a change in Strategy’s long-term Bitcoin strategy. As of October 25, the company reported $4.83 billion in USD reserves, mainly for preferred dividends and debt interest, plus about $242.4 million in more flexible cash. At a Bitcoin price near $79,937 on October 27, its holdings were worth an estimated $67.8 billion, or about $3.8 billion above their purchase cost before other financial and tax effects. The filing does not show that potential MSCI index eligibility changes caused the pause.
For Bitcoin traders, the update underscores Strategy’s need to balance BTC exposure with liquidity and financing obligations. The company did not indicate when it might resume Bitcoin purchases.
Neutral
The news is neutral for Bitcoin because Strategy’s holdings did not change during the reported week, and the filing gives no date for renewed purchases. The STRC buyback redirects cash toward preferred-stock obligations, but does not itself involve selling BTC or establish a change in the company’s long-term Bitcoin strategy. In the short term, traders may watch for whether the pause continues, as Strategy’s purchases can influence sentiment around institutional demand. However, one week without buying is not, on its own, a reliable signal of weaker Bitcoin demand across the market. Over the longer term, Strategy’s substantial BTC position remains a source of potential demand, while its cash reserves and financing costs affect its capacity to add more. The update therefore points to liquidity and corporate-finance considerations rather than a clear directional catalyst for Bitcoin’s price.
