Strategy Pauses Bitcoin Buys Again, Repurchases $176M
Strategy has paused Bitcoin purchases again, shortly after ending a reported 10-week buying hiatus. An earlier filing showed a five-week pause, unchanged holdings of 843,775 BTC and a cash reserve of about $3.75 billion. The latest update puts Strategy’s holdings at 845,050 BTC as of 7 September 2026, alongside $6.5 billion in dollar assets.
Instead of buying Bitcoin, Strategy repurchased $176 million of STRC preferred stock and doubled its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program to $2 billion. Earlier, it had sold about 5.4 million MSTR shares for $544.5 million and directed the proceeds to its cash reserve. The company also repurchased $25 million of STRC stock in that report.
Strategy’s Bitcoin accumulation has been constrained by funding conditions, including STRC trading below its intended $100 level. The company has used cash reserves, stock repurchases and occasional Bitcoin sales to manage its balance sheet. Chief executive Phong Le has described the balance sheet as “bullet-proof”. Strategy reported an $8.22 billion quarterly loss in July, largely because of Bitcoin price volatility.
For crypto traders, the latest Bitcoin purchase pause removes an important source of short-term institutional demand. This is a near-term headwind for BTC, although Strategy’s large holdings, cash reserves and potential future financing could support longer-term exposure. Traders are likely to monitor MSTR performance, preferred-stock financing, share repurchases and any resumption of Bitcoin buying.
Bearish
The immediate effect on BTC is mildly bearish because Strategy has again removed a major source of corporate Bitcoin demand. Its recurring purchases have been closely watched by traders, so another pause may weaken demand expectations and increase short-term sensitivity to broader market selling. The company’s shift towards cash reserves, preferred-stock repurchases and debt-related programmes also suggests that financing conditions are limiting its accumulation strategy.
The impact is not necessarily a signal of forced Bitcoin selling. Strategy still holds more than 845,000 BTC and has substantial dollar reserves, which may reduce near-term liquidity risk. If financing conditions improve or BTC rallies, the company could resume purchases and restore a bullish demand narrative. Therefore, the most likely market reaction is short-term downside pressure rather than a decisive long-term trend reversal.
