Swell Pauses swETH and rswETH After NAV Anomaly

Swell has paused deposits and withdrawals for swETH and rswETH while it corrects their reported net asset values (NAVs). The protocol has not said when services will resume. It says user funds are safe, and no ETH has left the tokens’ deposit or withdrawal contracts. Each token had about $29 million in reported value at the time of the reports. On-chain contract rates were about 1.203 ETH per swETH and 1.138 ETH per rswETH—roughly 6% and 5% above rates researchers considered reliable. Decentralised exchanges priced swETH near 1.089 WETH and rswETH near 1.029 WETH, highlighting a gap that may increase volatility and liquidity risks while redemptions are paused. Spreek said the tokens’ administrator keys may have been compromised on 21 October, potentially allowing reported NAVs to rise by up to 1% per hour without asset backing. Four suspected malicious upgrade contracts could reportedly have withdrawn about 2,513 ETH, but the transaction did not pass Swell’s multisignature queue. Phylax Systems founder Odysseus suggested possible misuse of a bot key. No losses have been confirmed, and a possible link to a Railway security incident remains unverified. Traders should watch for Swell updates and beware of phishing attempts.
Bearish
The news is bearish for swETH and rswETH in the short term. Paused deposits and withdrawals restrict direct redemptions, while the gap between contract-reported rates and decentralised exchange prices signals uncertainty over valuation and creates scope for volatility, slippage and discounted trading. Reports of possible administrator-key compromise and upgrade contracts capable of withdrawing ETH may also weaken confidence, although no loss has been confirmed and Swell says funds are safe. Longer-term price effects depend on the investigation and the restoration of reliable NAV reporting and withdrawals. If Swell confirms that funds remain intact, explains the cause and resumes normal operations, confidence and liquidity could recover. If the pause persists or evidence of unauthorized access or losses emerges, traders may continue to demand a risk discount and liquidity could deteriorate. The reported $29 million value per token and the potential 2,513 ETH exposure are relevant risk indicators, not confirmation that those amounts were lost or withdrawn.
