Tether Reserves Reach $7.95B as Q3 Profit Hits $1.5B
Tether reported $1.5 billion in third-quarter operating profit and $4.5 billion in profit for the first nine months of 2026. At the end of September, Tether held $191.45 billion in reserve assets against $183.50 billion in liabilities, leaving $7.95 billion in excess reserves—up from $4.1 billion at the end of June. BDO prepared the attestation covering the figures.
U.S. Treasury bills and related cash-equivalent holdings accounted for $139.58 billion of reserves; Tether separately reported $132.4 billion in direct and indirect Treasury bill holdings. It also held $19.08 billion in gold and $8.37 billion in Bitcoin, whose value had risen from about $5.8 billion in June. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements were the main sources of operating income.
USDT represents about 60% of the $297.3 billion stablecoin market. CEO Paolo Ardoino said its user base exceeded 700 million, with adoption concentrated in emerging markets. The larger Tether reserve buffer may support confidence in USDT’s backing and redemption capacity, but does not by itself signal a broad crypto rally. Transparency remains a point of scrutiny: Tether said it completed its first full independent financial statement audit by KPMG US in August, but did not publish the statements.
Neutral
The news is broadly supportive of confidence in USDT’s backing: Tether reported $7.95 billion in excess reserves, up sharply from June, and disclosed substantial Treasury bill holdings. Such figures may ease concerns about redemptions and help USDT maintain its dollar peg during periods of market stress. However, USDT is designed to track the US dollar, so stronger reserves do not normally create the kind of price upside traders seek in a volatile crypto asset. The figures therefore do not provide a clear directional trading signal for USDT itself.
In the short term, traders may view the larger buffer as reassuring, although questions about transparency could limit that response; the full financial statement audit cited by Tether was not made public. Over the longer term, continued reserve disclosures and credible independent audits could strengthen confidence in USDT’s peg and stability. Conversely, any doubts about asset quality, reporting or redemption access could renew pressure on the peg. Overall, the reserve update is relevant to stablecoin risk and market liquidity, but its expected direct price impact on USDT is neutral.
