Tokenized Assets and Payments Outpace Blockchain Revenue

Tokenized assets, payments and other real-economy applications generated 22% of crypto industry revenue in Q3 2026, edging past blockchain infrastructure at 21%, according to 1kx. It is the first time these broader-economy applications have out-earned infrastructure in the firm’s tracking. The report projects total industry revenue of about $100 billion for 2026, down 28% from roughly $140 billion in 2025. Transaction fees paid to chains now represent less than 3% of industry revenue. Real-world activity included $3.4 billion in digital-asset payment-card spending during Q3 and more than $13 billion in tokenized-equity trading volume on Robinhood Chain. Public companies accounted for 16% of blockchain revenue in 2026, compared with 7% in 2022. The findings suggest tokenized assets and payments are becoming more important sources of crypto revenue, while chain fees alone provide a less complete measure of activity.
Neutral
The report points to a change in where crypto revenue is generated, rather than an immediate catalyst for token prices. Growth in tokenized assets, payment cards and tokenized-equity trading may support the long-term case for real-world blockchain use and broaden demand beyond speculative trading. However, the industry revenue forecast is about $100 billion for 2026, down 28% year on year, which tempers the positive signal. The figures also do not establish that revenue growth will flow directly to public-chain tokens or improve their value capture. In the short term, traders may respond selectively to companies and projects exposed to tokenized assets and payments, while broader market direction is more likely to depend on liquidity, risk appetite and major crypto prices. The report could encourage closer attention to payment volumes, tokenized-stock activity and protocol revenue-sharing, but is unlikely by itself to drive a broad market move. Over the longer term, continued growth in real-economy applications could strengthen fundamentals for relevant platforms and regulated crypto businesses. As with previous adoption and revenue reports, the market impact will depend on whether usage persists and translates into durable fees, earnings or token value—not just higher activity.
