RWA Tokenization Scales Into Institutional Crypto Infrastructure
Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization is moving from a crypto experiment to regulated financial infrastructure. Earlier data showed tokenized RWAs excluding stablecoins rising to about $29.27 billion by April 2026, from roughly $1.5 billion in early 2023. Tokenized US Treasuries expanded from about $380 million in the first quarter of 2023 to $13.4 billion, while commodities, equities and yield-bearing dollar products also grew.
Newer estimates show further expansion. RWA.xyz tracks more than $36.8 billion in distributed tokenized assets, 1.35 million holders and over 6,100 assets. CoinGecko reported that non-stablecoin tokenized RWAs increased 256.7% from $5.42 billion at the start of 2025 to $19.32 billion by 31 March 2026. Tokenized US Treasury funds remain the largest category at about $16.2 billion across 85 assets. Tokenized commodities reached roughly $5.5 billion, while tokenized gold recorded $90.7 billion in first-quarter spot trading volume.
Institutional adoption is also deepening. BlackRock’s BUIDL, Franklin Templeton’s BENJI and Ondo Finance products such as OUSG and USDY are helping bring traditional assets on-chain. BENJI held about $1.98 billion in assets, including more than $650 million on Stellar. Franklin Templeton and Binance also announced a programme allowing eligible institutions to use BENJI shares as off-exchange trading collateral. Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange are developing 24/7 tokenized securities infrastructure.
The technology is advancing beyond issuance. BIS Project Agorá, involving eight central banks and more than 40 financial institutions, demonstrated atomic multi-currency settlement using tokenized central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits. A cross-border intraday repo using tokenized UK gilts was also completed on the Canton Network, while the Bank of England explored tokenized settlement through its Synchronisation Lab.
For crypto traders, RWA tokenization could increase long-term demand for blockchain infrastructure, DeFi collateral and networks such as Ethereum and Solana. However, the immediate price effect is uncertain. Tokenized asset value does not guarantee secondary-market liquidity. Market makers, redemption mechanisms, interoperability, custody, legal ownership and regulation remain critical risks. The next stage of RWA tokenization will depend less on issuing more tokens and more on making existing assets liquid, interoperable and useful across financial markets.
Neutral
The long-term development is constructive for crypto infrastructure. Tokenized Treasuries and money-market funds could create new collateral demand, settlement activity and institutional use cases for Ethereum, Solana and Stellar. Large financial institutions, central banks and exchanges are also testing tokenized settlement, which may strengthen confidence in blockchain-based markets.
However, the direct price impact on the mentioned cryptocurrencies is likely limited in the short term. The reported growth is measured mainly in tokenized asset value and trading activity, not in spot purchases of ETH, SOL or XLM. Many products operate on permissioned networks or multiple chains, so the benefits may not accrue to one token. Traders may also discount the news because liquidity, redemption, legal ownership, custody and regulation remain unresolved. As a result, the news supports a positive long-term narrative but is unlikely by itself to produce a sustained price move, making a neutral classification appropriate.
