Bitmine Nears 5% ETH Target as $2T Wealth Transfer Looms
Bitmine chairman Tom Lee says $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion in US wealth could pass to younger generations from 2026 to 2028, potentially boosting demand for Ethereum and other risk assets. Lee says younger investors may be more willing to buy crypto and equities, although the share of inherited wealth that reaches markets is uncertain. He also cites blockchain tokenisation, AI development and crypto treasury firms as possible market growth drivers.
Bitmine bought 12,532 ETH last week, worth about $32 million, bringing its holdings to 6,028,946 ETH, or about 4.9% of the estimated 122.1 million ETH supply. It is roughly 76,000 ETH short of its 5% target and could reach it in about six weeks at its recent buying pace. Lee says Bitmine will stop accumulating ETH once it reaches that goal. The company has staked about 5.07 million ETH and estimates annualised staking income of $336 million at current yields.
Bullish
The near-term signal for ETH is modestly positive: Bitmine’s continued purchases add a large, visible source of demand, while staking about 5.07 million ETH keeps a substantial share of its holdings committed to staking. The proposed generational wealth transfer could also support longer-term demand for ETH and other risk assets if younger heirs allocate part of their wealth to crypto.
The effect is not assured. The wealth transfer is a forecast, not confirmed investment into ETH, and Bitmine has said it will stop buying once it reaches 5% of supply. That could remove a significant buyer after the target is met, potentially limiting further support from its treasury activity. Traders may therefore treat the accumulation and staking figures as supportive, while weighing the uncertainty around future demand and the approaching end of purchases. Overall, the news leans bullish for ETH, but does not by itself establish a lasting price trend or market stability.
