ETH Short Falls to $7.88M After Whale Reversal

Lookonchain reported that a crypto address closed long positions in 1,000 BTC and 10,000 ETH after holding them for four months, booking more than $20 million in profit. It then opened a 20x leveraged short of 13,000 ETH, valued at about $29 million. In a later update, Odaily reported that an address closed an ETH long position valued at $10,000 and opened an ETH short worth about $18.85 million. It subsequently closed around $10.88 million of that short, leaving an ETH short position valued at about $7.88 million. The reports show substantial changes in ETH derivatives exposure, but their position estimates differ. A single trader’s ETH short is not enough to establish a broader market trend.
Neutral
The trader’s sizeable ETH short indicates bearish positioning and could add to near-term selling pressure if other traders interpret the move as a signal or follow it. However, the later update shows that part of the short was closed, reducing the remaining exposure to about $7.88 million. The earlier and later reports also give different estimates of the short position, so they should not be treated as a precise, continuous measure of one position. Whale trades can influence sentiment and derivatives activity in the short term, but a single address does not determine ETH’s direction. Broader indicators—including spot demand, market-wide futures positioning, funding rates, liquidity and wider market conditions—would be needed to assess a lasting price impact. The overall view is therefore neutral, while recognizing the trader’s remaining position is bearish.
