Token Ratings: Uniswap Leads, AAA Still Carries Risk
DefiLlama and Forgd have launched Universal Token Rating, a live AAA-to-CCC token ratings system covering 128 of 149 listed assets. The methodology multiplies disclosure and performance scores, rather than averaging them, to ensure weaknesses in either area materially affect the result.
Uniswap’s UNI is the only AAA-rated token, with a composite score of 60.80, based on disclosure and performance scores of 7.87 and 7.72. Meteora ranks second with an AA rating and a score of 58.48, while Curve DAO ranks third at 53.32.
The token ratings assess disclosures on tokenomics, insider wallets and commercial arrangements, alongside market indicators such as liquidity, spreads, exchange coverage, trading activity and market-maker conduct. DefiLlama and Forgd compare project submissions with exchange records, on-chain data and market-maker reports. Missing or outdated information can reduce a project’s disclosure score, while weak or temporary liquidity can lower its performance score.
The ratings update continuously and can reflect events such as token unlocks and exchange listings. However, the companies stressed that an AAA rating is not an investment recommendation, a return forecast or proof that a token is safe. The system does not fully assess cybersecurity, governance or undisclosed relationships. For traders, the dashboard is best used as a screening and market-quality tool rather than a standalone signal.
Neutral
The expected market impact is neutral. The launch of institutional token ratings could support better transparency and improve confidence in liquid, well-disclosed assets over the long term. UNI may receive short-term attention because it is the only AAA-rated token, while MET and CRV could also benefit from ranking-related visibility.
However, the methodology is new and does not predict returns. The article provides no evidence that high-rated tokens experience smaller drawdowns or outperform the market. AAA also excludes important risks such as smart-contract security, governance failures, regulatory actions and broader market stress. Traders may therefore treat the dashboard as an additional due-diligence filter rather than a buy signal.
Historically, exchange listings, institutional scoring systems and transparency initiatives have often produced short-lived attention or relative outperformance for highlighted assets, but these effects can fade when liquidity, token unlocks or macro conditions become more important. In the short term, rating announcements may increase volume and speculative interest in UNI, while lower-rated tokens could face reputational pressure. In the long term, continuously updated ratings may encourage stronger disclosures and more durable liquidity, but their predictive value remains unproven. Overall, the system is more likely to improve market information quality than to create a broad bullish or bearish move.
