VanEck Withdraws Lido stETH ETF Proposal
VanEck has withdrawn its proposed Lido stETH ETF, the first US ETF application based on Lido’s liquid-staking token. In a Form RW filing on 14 October, the firm said the registration statement had never become effective and no shares had been issued or sold; it gave no reason. The proposal was designed to offer brokerage-account exposure to stETH, but the VanEck Lido stETH ETF never reached launch.
Neutral
The withdrawal is a setback for Lido’s effort to bring liquid staking to traditional investors, but it does not directly change Ethereum’s protocol, staking activity or overall ETF demand. The newer report adds that rival Ethereum ETFs can stake ETH directly, which may reduce the appeal of an intermediary-based stETH product. It also cites Lido TVL falling from nearly $40 billion when the application was filed to about $23.4 billion on 15 October, and MetaMask’s precautionary withdrawal of validators from Lido-operated infrastructure after a security incident. These factors could weigh on sentiment towards Lido and its token in the short term, but neither summary links them to a definite change in ETH demand or price. Longer term, Ethereum’s price is more likely to respond to broader market conditions, ETF flows and network usage than to the withdrawal of this unlaunched product. The direct price impact on ETH is therefore assessed as neutral.
