Zcash Turns 10 as Grayscale Highlights Developer Funding
Zcash’s 20% block reward allocation has funded nearly a decade of privacy and security development, according to Grayscale, as the network approaches its tenth anniversary on October 28, 2026. Miners receive the remaining 80%. Of the development allocation, 8% supports community grants and 12% is set aside for retroactive grants in a development lockbox, with spending subject to community decisions.
Grayscale cites Zcash’s shielded transaction upgrades, including Sprout, Sapling, Orchard and Ironwood, as evidence of sustained development. Ironwood went live in July 2026 and introduced formal supply-integrity verification and quantum-recoverable notes, though those notes alone do not make the network fully quantum-resistant. In October, ZEC holders approved $8.39 million for 17 retroactive grant projects focused on security research, protocol development, formal verification and audits.
The funding discussion follows ZEC’s roughly 25% decline in October, despite $41.09 million in net inflows to Grayscale’s Zcash Trust. The planned NU7 upgrade on November 5, 2026, aims to cut block intervals from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Grayscale says future work will need to address transaction capacity, quantum computing and AI-driven cyber threats. The funding model and upgrade plans may support Zcash’s long-term development, but do not guarantee a price recovery or create a clear near-term catalyst. Traders will be watching governance decisions, use of the lockbox and NU7 delivery.
Neutral
The news is neutral for ZEC overall. In the short term, the funding announcement and approval of $8.39 million in grants may reinforce confidence in Zcash’s development, while the planned NU7 upgrade offers a potential source of positive sentiment. However, these are long-term network developments rather than direct drivers of immediate token demand. ZEC’s roughly 25% October decline, despite substantial inflows into Grayscale’s trust, also shows that investment-product flows and development news have not necessarily translated into stronger spot prices. Grayscale has a commercial interest in Zcash, so its assessment should also be considered in that context.
Over the longer term, consistent funding for privacy, security and protocol improvements could support user confidence and the network’s competitiveness. The effects depend on effective governance, the allocation of lockbox funds and successful delivery of NU7 and future upgrades. Risks include execution delays, limited market adoption, quantum and cybersecurity threats, and wider crypto-market conditions. Past reactions to development funding or upgrade plans do not ensure a price response; traders may therefore treat the news as a constructive fundamental update, but not as a standalone buy signal.
