Zcash Rally Meets Whale Buying and ETF Outflows

Zcash (ZEC) has surged more than 1,000% in the past year, rising from about $60 to nearly $1,700 before retreating towards $1,400. Earlier momentum pushed ZEC to a record high near $1,595 and into the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. The rally was initially supported by Grayscale’s spot Zcash ETF, ZCSH, which attracted about $233 million in inflows after launching on 25 August. Privacy coins including Monero and Dash also gained, pointing to a broader sector rotation. Zcash advocates describe the project as “encrypted Bitcoin”, combining privacy, fungibility, scalability and potential protection from future quantum threats. More recent on-chain data shows continued whale accumulation. One large wallet received about 41,690 ZEC and transferred roughly 18,730, leaving a net increase of approximately 22,960 ZEC worth $31.7 million. It later received another 4,200 ZEC valued at about $5.84 million. Grayscale research head Zach Pandl said ZEC could gain further market share as artificial intelligence increases financial privacy risks and investors question the transparency of public blockchains such as Bitcoin. Zcash’s market capitalisation has risen from less than 0.1% of Bitcoin’s to about 1.5% over the past year. However, momentum has weakened in the ETF market. US-listed Zcash ETFs recorded no net flows from 23 to 25 September, followed by about $8.12 million in outflows on Monday, their largest daily withdrawal. The funds still hold roughly 3.75% of Zcash’s supply. For traders, whale buying and the privacy narrative remain supportive, but elevated valuations, sharp volatility and ETF outflows increase the risk of profit-taking.
Neutral
The news presents mixed signals for ZEC. In the short term, the more than 1,000% annual rally, whale accumulation and continued interest in privacy coins could support buying activity and help sustain elevated prices. Earlier ETF inflows also provided a significant institutional demand catalyst. However, the latest ETF data is less supportive. Several days of zero flows followed by a record $8.12 million outflow may indicate profit-taking or weaker institutional demand. ZEC’s sharp rise has also lifted valuations and increased the risk of a deep correction if momentum traders exit. The coin’s recent price retreat shows that volatility is already high. Over the longer term, growing concerns about artificial intelligence, financial surveillance and transparent blockchains could strengthen demand for Zcash. Its rising market share and development work on scalability and quantum resistance are additional potential catalysts. However, the privacy-coin sector remains sensitive to regulation, liquidity conditions and shifting narratives. On balance, strong fundamentals and whale buying offset the near-term ETF and valuation risks, supporting a neutral rather than clearly bullish or bearish assessment.
