Zcash Proposal Would End Automatic 8% Grant Funding
Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe has proposed ending the automatic allocation of 8% of Zcash block rewards to Zcash Community Grants (ZCG). The change would redirect the share to the Network Sustainability Mechanism, which holds ZEC out of circulation and gradually returns it through future block rewards. The proposal would not increase total issuance, and ZCG could continue managing its existing funds and honoring grants.
The latest draft says ZCG holds 91,452.98 ZEC, about $8.8 million in dollar-denominated assets and has $2.4 million in outstanding grant commitments. It also estimates the current allocation could generate more than $68 million in ZEC annually, while ZCG spent $1.53 million in the first quarter of 2026. An earlier report put ZCG’s holdings at about $111 million in ZEC and $8.8 million in cash, and said the proposed redirection would run through the current funding period, ending in 2028. The newer draft says the proposal has no activation height, requires a future network upgrade and is not part of planned upgrade NU7. The separate 12% allocation to the Coinholder-Controlled Fund would remain unchanged. For ZEC traders, the proposal is a governance and future distribution development, not an immediate change to circulating supply.
Neutral
The proposal does not immediately change ZEC’s circulating supply or total issuance, so it offers no clear near-term supply shock in either direction. In the short term, traders may react to governance discussion and any resulting uncertainty around grant funding, but the draft has no activation height and still requires a future network upgrade. That makes an immediate price effect less likely.
Over the longer term, redirecting the 8% allocation to the Network Sustainability Mechanism could alter when ZEC is distributed back into circulation through future block rewards. This may affect expectations about future supply timing, while leaving the separate 12% Coinholder-Controlled Fund allocation unchanged. The proposal also highlights the scale of ZCG’s reserves relative to its recent spending, which could influence views on Zcash’s funding model and ecosystem development. These factors may shape sentiment, but without a confirmed implementation date or a direct change to issuance, the overall price impact is best assessed as neutral.
