ZEC and NEAR Emerge as Crypto Capital-Rotation Targets
Bankless co-founder David Hoffman says ZEC could become a major crypto capital-rotation trade in 2026, similar to ETH in 2021. He argues that Bitcoin holders are directing some funds into ZEC for privacy, quantum resistance and portfolio diversification. ZEC’s market capitalisation has reportedly climbed from about $200 million to $26 billion, but it remains small compared with Bitcoin’s roughly $1.7 trillion valuation. Even limited BTC-holder allocation could therefore support further ZEC demand and relative outperformance.
Hoffman also identifies NEAR as a potential “smart-contract bid” competing with ETH and SOL. However, he says NEAR’s buying power is weaker and more fragmented than ZEC’s. He describes BTC and ETH as mature blue-chip assets facing lower expected returns, technological constraints and questions over value capture from projects such as Hyperliquid, Venice, Lighter, Ethena and Morpho.
The comments are an individual investment thesis, not evidence of confirmed institutional flows. Traders should monitor ZEC/BTC and NEAR/ETH relative strength, spot volume, BTC dominance and volatility. Both narratives could support short-term momentum, but crowded positioning and sharp reversals remain significant risks.
Bullish
The thesis is bullish for ZEC and, to a lesser extent, NEAR because it highlights a potential flow of capital from mature assets into these tokens. ZEC could benefit most if Bitcoin holders rotate into privacy-focused assets, particularly while its market capitalisation remains small relative to BTC. Such a narrative may lift ZEC trading volume, relative strength and short-term momentum. NEAR could also gain if traders seek exposure to a new smart-contract leader, although its demand is described as weaker and more fragmented.
The impact is not a confirmed market signal. There is no evidence of institutional buying, and the reported valuation growth may already reflect substantial speculation. If BTC dominance remains high, ZEC/BTC and NEAR/ETH fail to strengthen, or early buyers take profits, both tokens could experience sharp reversals. Over the longer term, sustained performance would require continued capital inflows, product adoption and credible value capture. On balance, the reported rotation thesis creates a bullish directional bias, but with high narrative and volatility risk.
